pushed the schedule back a week because i was having creative block while putting this together - and forcing it rarely works. thankfully, it all came together over the weekend, including a very special playlist for today. enjoy!
listening
high vibes playlist - my friend who works at magic city organics reached out this weekend asking for music recs for their event today, so of course i hyperfocused on this project and ended up with an entire playlist. these songs: lift my mood, provide good vibes, are soul-stirring, and/or give me frisson. (i just learned that word from tiktok.) press shuffle and enjoy the ambience!
wet leg by wet leg - i have been looking forward to this album ever since i heard chaise longue on the radio last summer - itâs funny, irreverent, with a driving beat & guitar riff reminiscent of the strokes. the album is more of the same - droll lyrics (âi donât want to follow you on the gram, i donât want to listen to your band, i donât know why i havenât left yetâ) set to a throwback sound that combines all the best of 00âs indie. perfect for playing hooky on a sunny summer friday, windows down.
"normal gossip delivers juicy, strange, funny, and utterly banal gossip about people youâll never know and never meet,â says the podcast description. hosted by kelsey mckinney, normal gossip feels like having drinks with your funniest friends; most recently, i put it on while cleaning house and it totally took my mind off of how much i hate doing chores. if you liked scam goddess, give this one a go. (i have linked the episode featuring laci mosley, the scam goddess host.)
reading
tastes like star stuff - my friend karen started a newsletter (i may/may not have applied peer pressure to this decision) and boy do i love it. sheâs not only fantastic at curation - she has a wonderfully dry wit! you should definitely subscribe to get all her lovely recsâŚand maybe you should start a newsletter too?
snack time by ariella elovic - i canât remember how exactly i came across ariellaâs newsletter, but i was instantly smitten! in her words, snack time is âhere to make you feel less alone in your messy body/mind/soul.â the art is reminiscent of my favorite book series as a child: ameliaâs notebook, crossed with one of my favorite internet projects: daily purchase drawings by kate bingaman-burt. from hot girl IBS to childhood snacks to millennial growing pains, it never fails to make me feel seen while putting a smile on my face.
side chat with stephanie - reporter stephanie mcneal is on the influencer + internet culture beat at buzzfeed, which means that i obsessively consume everything she puts out. (love drama that doesnât affect me! see gossip pod above đ) her newsletter contains fun tidbits like: yassified rae dunn, mlm drama, how much she hates Reels (same, tbh.) and the generally absurd existence of professional influencers.
move ur body
ways that i have been moving my body with love and care in order to get those good good chemicals that my brain doesnât make enough of:
stretchies: some days, i simply cannot fathom a workout. you know the days - you didnât sleep well, work was non-stop, youâd rather collapse on your bed and stare at the ceiling. all of these things are LEGITIMATE REASONS TO NOT WORK OUT. (we should all be just as concerned about our pursuit of rest as we are our pursuit of exercise!!!) anyway - on those days, i like to do âstretchies,â a very un-structured practice where i lay on my yoga mat in the dark and, surpriseâŚstretch! i really just do whatever my body needs that day. keeping it non-committal helps me get started, and i usually end up stretching for 20-30 minutes. itâs restorative and meditative, and helps me tune into my body. (pro tip: take your melatonin first, and use it as a wind down!)
saw this reel the other day and saved it for later; sitting at a desk all day turns me into what i like to call a âcomputer goblinâ - rounded back, hunched shoulders, straining my neck forward. i already do some of these but desperately need to do all of them!
i legitimately look forward to doing @getstonedandtoned workouts - i tend to stick to the barre/mat pilates-style workouts, but they also offer yoga, dance cardio, and meditation. the classes are creative and fun, the instructors feel like theyâd be my friends IRL, and they kick. my. ass. (iâve been adding my 2lb. bala bangles and yâallâŚđĽľ) even more, i have found that - ahem - partaking before a workout strengthens my mind-muscle connection and keeps me aware of my body/form. highly recommend. (psstâŚhereâs my referral link if youâre thinking about subscribing!)
